Obituary For Margaret J. Hausheer

Mother, teacher, wife, and community volunteer

Margaret J. Hausheer (nee Snyder) peacefully passed away on January 20, 2024 at the age of 93.

A native Staten Islander, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years Carl W. and her sisters, Edna and Dorothy . She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Carl (Carol), Doranne (Michael), Anne Marie (Charlie), and Ruth (Jim); her grandchildren, Camille, Jeff, Elena, Robert, Kristyn, Colin, Kathleen, Lauren, Lexie, Kelly, MJ, great-grandchildren Remie and Cayson, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was a dedicated caregiver for her children, her husband and her parents as they aged. The family is very grateful to the wonderful staff at Sunrise Assisted-Living of SI, who lovingly helped our family in caring for our beloved caregiver when she needed extra care.

Margie grew up in West Brighton, attending P.S. 45 and Curtis High School. She received a BA and MA from Wagner College. She was a proud member of Alpha Delta Pi and delightedly attended annual sorority gatherings for over 70 years. In addition to her academic pursuits, she was an avid and talented Bridge player.

Mrs. Hausheer taught generations children in primary grades in NYC public schools. She spent many years teaching on Staten Island and in Brooklyn, retiring from P.S. 60 of Staten Island.

Margie embodied a spirit of community involvement. She and Carl enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels on Thursday mornings. She volunteered as a CCD teacher at Our Lady Queen of Peace and was a Girl Scout Leader for her daughters.

Margie loved her large group of friends with whom she enjoyed annual extended “friends and family” vacations on Long Beach Island.

Calling hours are Wednesday 1/24 from 3 -7pm, at Hanley Funeral Home on New Dorp Lane. The Funeral Mass is 9:30a.m. on Thursday 1/25 at Our Lady Queen Of Peace Church on New Dorp Lane.

As a lifelong educator, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Margaret’s name to the Wagner Fund, or an educational institution of your choice.
