NYC Dept. of Ed. Director of Support Services, loving family man
Leonard E. Del Rio, 74, of Columbus, NJ, formally of Oakwood, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2023. Born and raised in Staten Island, he grew up in Westerleigh.
A graduate of Port Richmond High School, Leonard went on to the College of Staten Island to earn his bachelor's and further earned his advanced master's degree in education and administration from Richmond College. He was employed by the New York City Department of Education, District 31, for more than 30 years as the Director of Support Services. Leonard was involved in serving the educational needs of students on Staten Island and played an active role in the design and build of school buildings with his last school build being PS. 58 in New Springville before his retirement.
In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his family and dear friends, as well as taking rides in his Corvette, dining at new restaurants, and traveling.
Leonard is predeceased by his parents, Jesus and Maria Del Rio. Surviving is his loving and devoted wife of 49 years, Florence, two daughters, Cara D'Alessandro and her husband Sal, and their children Salvatore and Giuliana, Cassie Cognetta and her husband Jack, both of Huguenot; and nieces and nephews.
There will be a viewing at Hanley Funeral Home in New Dorp on Thursday, September 14 from 7-9pm, Friday, September 15 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm, and a mass at St. Charles Church on Saturday, September 16 at 9:15am with burial at Ocean View Cemetery thereafter.
