Obituary For Lawrence G. Johannesen

Lawrence Gunvald Johannesen (Larry) was born August 19, 1935, in Brooklyn to Theodora (Nilsen) and Erling Johannesen. He graduated from Fort Hamilton High School in 1953, and after graduation, he joined the Air Force. During the Korean War, he went to basic training in Mobile, Alabama, and was stationed at Westover AFB in Massachusetts. This is where Lawrence became a master aircraft mechanic. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. Upon honorable discharge, he lived in West Babylon, NY, and started working at Pan American World Airlines. He worked for Pan Am for 37 years and left upon their closure. During his retirement, he worked as a bus driver and mail room messenger to keep himself busy.

Larry was a first-generation Norwegian-American who traveled to Norway in 1950 with his parents and brothers. He enjoyed retelling stories of his misadventures on the MS Stavangerfjord, a ship built in 1892 that hit a hurricane and led him to never step foot on a cruise ship again.

In July 1963, Larry married the love of his life, Teresa. They moved to Staten Island in 1967 and had three daughters. He cherished his family, often taking them on vacations to Lake George, Binghamton, and Disney World. Teresa and Larry traveled to Florida, Ireland, and Hawaii and took numerous weekend trips with their friends, the “Party Animals,” to Ocean City and Virginia Beach. Larry was an old movie and car enthusiast who enjoyed sharing a meal and beer with family and friends. In recent years, he had become an avid reader who read a book a day.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Teresa; his daughters Kathleen, Maureen Russo (Scott), and Eileen Votinelli (Thomas); and the granddaughters he adored, Samantha Nichilo (Philip), Victoria Russo, and Nicole Votinelli. His brothers Arthur Johannesen (Daria) and Edward Johannesen (Ellen) also survived him.
