Obituary For Joseph V Cappello
Native Staten Islander, Joseph V. Cappello, 82, of New Dorp, a loving son, brother, and uncle, known for his beautiful artwork and love of music, died on Monday, January 22, 2024, after a brief illness.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 26th at 8:15 am at Hanley Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a Catholic Mass following at 10:15 am at St. Charles Roman Catholic Church, Oakwood. Burial will be a Resurrection Cemetery in Pleasant Plains.
Joe was born on August 3, 1941, in Staten Island to the late Laura (Crociata) Cappello Costa and Anthony Cappello. He attended Pratt Institute for Architecture and received a B.A. in Fine Arts from Wagner College and an MBA in Business from Wagner College. He was a retired Civil Engineer and Manager at the NYC Department of Transportation & Highway engineering at Borough Hall Staten Island for over 35 years.
Joe was the President of the Artists’ Federation of Staten Island, a gifted artist who participated in many art shows in Staten Island and Manhattan, and often won awards for his work. He specialized in painting landscapes and still portraits. He was a parishioner of St. Charles R.C. Church, Oakwood where he built elaborate sets and background scenes for the drama productions there.
Joe was also a talented musician and played the piano, saxophone, clarinet, and flute. He played with local Staten Island bands during the 1960s and 1970s. His lifelong love of music continued in his retirement years, and he shared his love of art and music with his cherished family members and often spent time teaching his nieces and great nephews about art and music during family get togethers.
Joe was predeceased by his mother Laura Cappello Costa, his father, Anthony Cappello, and his sister, Maria Cohen. He is survived by his sister, Josephine LeMole (Robert), nieces, Suzanne LeMole Parent (Bryant), Jacqueline Giardiello (Gregory) and great nephews, Matthew Giardiello, Nicholas Giardiello, and Andrew Parent.
