Obituary

It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of Joseph “Mony” Santoro (Staten Island, NY), born November 28, 1925 in Messina, Sicily. He passed away on August, 29, 2023 at 97 years of age. Joe arrived in Brooklyn, NY in 1932, attended PS 160 as a young man, then graduated from Pershing High School in 1939. He proudly served his country in the Navy during WWII and, upon his return joined the United States Post Office as a letter carrier in Borough Park, Brooklyn for 30+ years, a job of which he was immensely proud. He eventually became a supervisor at the General Post Office in downtown Brooklyn and remained there for the balance of his career. In 1949, Joe married the love of his life, Lillian (Ruggeri) Santoro. They remained happily married and in love for 54 years, until her passing in 2003. Lifelong friends and partners, they spent their time together loving, laughing, traveling, eating good food and spoiling their loved ones. Joseph was the oldest of seven siblings and is survived by his sons John Santoro and his wife Clara, Joseph Santoro and his wife Donna and Steven Santoro; grandchildren Michelle Yzaguirre and her husband Danny, John Joseph Santoro and his wife Jenifer and Alexis Santoro; great-grandchildren, Victoria and Daniel Yzaguirre and Matthew and Ryleigh Santoro.

Visitation will take place at Hanley Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 5, from 2-4pm and 7-9pm.

Funeral Mass will take place at St. Patrick’s RC Church, Staten Island, on Wednesday, September 6 at 10am. In lieu of flowers, and in the spirit of Joe’s endless generosity, donations may be made in his name to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105
