Obituary For Harriet Donohue


Harriet was 94. the daughter of Henri and Harriet Capdevielle and a life-long Staten Islander. She first resided in New Dorp and attended Our Lady Queen of Peach Church and school. She graduated from New Dorp High School.

Harriet met her future husband Edward while ice skating at Flaggs Pond, now called Ohrbach Lake. He was home on leave from the U.S. Coast Guard. They were married in 1951 and lived in West Brighton for a short time. They moved to Grant City in 1953. They enjoyed going to the Jersey Shore, especially Long Beach Island. Harriet was also happy travelling with her family to Arizona, Europe, Bermuda, California and went on a Grant Canyon River trip.

Harriet was employed by New York State at South Beach Psychiatric Center for 13 years in the Human Resources Department. After that she worked part-time at Staten Island University Hospital North in the Nursing Department and retired in 2000. She was a volunteer at St. Christopher’s School when her children were young. She also volunteered at Staten Island University North as well as the former Staten Island Hospital in Tompkinsville. She was also a member of NAMI SI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill).

Edward, her husband of 58 years, died in 2009. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia, sons, Edward and Richard, sister Cecelia Galante of Arizona, and grandchildren Daniel, Randy, and Taylor. Her brother Martin Capdevielle died in 2004.

The wake will be held at Hanley Funeral Home on Feb. 28 from 2-4 & 7-9. Mass will be held at St. Christopher’s Church on Feb. 29 at 10:30.
