Retired Firefighter - Ordained Deacon

Deacon Frederick Fausak, born in Jersey City on July 9th, 1936, moved to Dongan Hills, Staten Island after meeting his wife, Theresa Ferrari. They married in 1961, where they had the distinction of being the first couple wedded at St. Simon's Church, Concord.

In 1955, he enlisted in the Army, serving in Ft. Campbell, KY, and Germany, with the 11th Airborne Division, participating in over 30 jumps as a Paratrooper.

Fred was a firefighter for the New York City Fire Department for 28 years, including 15 years in Ladder 81, and retired in 1995 from the 21 Battalion.

Fred also spent 17 years as a substitute teacher at I.S. 2 in Midland Beach. He was very active in the Church of St. Andrew, Richmondtown, serving as Youth Leader for 10 years. He was a member of the vestry, and served as both a lector and chalice-bearer. In 1992, he was raised up by the parish to seek ordination to the diaconate program. He was ordained at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in 1997, and served as deacon at St. Andrew's.

Deacon Fred was a lifetime member of the New York City Fire Department Retirees, Staten Island Division. He has served as their chaplain since his ordination, and additionally served on the Board of Directors. He was also a lifetime member of the St. George Association, and a member of the Fire Department Viking Association. He volunteered for many years at Eger Heatlh Care Center, and also volunteered as a coach for PeeWee Football and Little League Baseball. Besides volunteering, his other passion was playing golf. He and his wife also loved to travel, especially cruising.

Deacon Fred's greatest joy in life was the love of his family. Fred and Terry have been deeply in love for 62 years of marriage, and have raised their family together, which includes their daughter Donna Barr and her husband David, son Daniel Fausak and his wife Patricia, and daughter Debra Rabin and her husband Gary. He is also survived by his sister, Anna Mahoney.

He has been blessed with seven grandchildren: Jenna Haxton and her husband Keith, Michael Barr, Kasey Fausak, Elisabeth Fausak, Daniel Fausak, Joshua Rabin, and Emma Rabin. He is also the proud great-grandfather of Bentley and Oliver Haxton, and was looking forward to welcoming his third great-grandchild this month.

Friends may visit Hanley Funeral Home on New Dorp Lane on Monday, 7/31 from 2:00pm - 4:00pm and 7:00pm-9:00pm. Funeral mass will be held at the Church of St. Andrew in Richmondtown on Tuesday 8/1 at 11:00am.
