Obituary For Edith Holtermann

PhysEd Teacher, Mother of 5, Active with Cedar Grove Beach Club
Edith G. Holtermann (nee Armend) passed away peacefully at home on March 8th, 2024. She was born on October 2, 1928 and was a lifelong Staten Islander. She lived in Oakwood until she married her husband, Albert Holtermann, and moved to Richmondtown. Edie attended P.S. 8, New Dorp High School, Skidmore College and Richmond College for her Masters in Education. She taught Physical Education at New Dorp High School and Susan E. Wagner High School. She was very involved in her husband's family business -Holtermann's Bakery.
Growing up she spent her summers as a child and then with her husband and their five children at Cedar Grove Beach Club. She was a resident for over 70 years and was the first woman president of the Beach Club as well as spending many years as a Board member.
Throughout her long life, Edie was very involved in her community and was not one to keep idle.
She was a Den mother for Troop 25 when her sons were young; she held elected offices at P.S. 23, P.S. 28, Egbert Jr. High School and New Dorp High School while her children were attending those schools. She also was very involved with her church, St. Andrew's in Richmondtown, where she taught Sunday School for over 42 years.
She was a founding member, president and treasurer of the New Dorp High School Foundation of Alumni and Friends. She was president of the Staten Island Chapter of the NY State of Health & Physical Education and Dance (NYSAPHERD), Treasurer of the Women's Club of Great Kills, co-coordinator of the S.I. Chapter of the Protestant Teachers, Secretary to Seamans Church Institute, S.I. Chapter. She was also the Class Secretary of Skidmore's Class of 1949 which she finally gave up at age 85.
She loved gardening, exercising, dancing, baking, playing bridge and her huge yard sales. She loved nothing more than being with her family and hosting every holiday especially hiding 100 eggs for Easter. She never missed an event for her children and grandchildren. She is the rock of the family.
Edie was predeceased by her husband, Albert Holtermann. She is survived by her sister, June Catherwood and her five children, Albert Holtermann, Penny Buli, Dean Holtermann, Neil Holtermann and Dawn Wyatt, fourteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be Sunday, March 10, from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. at Hanley Funeral Home, 60 New Dorp Lane, Staten Island. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, March 11, at 11 a.m. in St. Andrew's Church, Richmondtown. Burial in St. Andrew's Church graveyard.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Richmondtown Historical Society, St. Andrew's Church, or New Dorp High School Alumni Society would be appreciated.
