Obituary For Cyril Mericko

Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle

Cyril Mericko, 83 passed away on February 20 with his loving family by his side.

Cyril was born in Zavadka, Slovakia and lived under Nazi and Soviet occupation before relocating to New York City at the age of 11. Cyril graduated from Manhattan High School of Aviation Trades in 1958 and enlisted in the US Army in 1960. Cyril spoke 4 languages and was stationed in Germany and France, where he proudly served his country.

On his return he was introduced to Ann by one of his friends, Nancy. Cyril and Ann were married at St Ann Church in 1965 and were happily married for 58 years. Cyril was a devoted husband, loving father to his daughters, Patricia and Catherine and his sons-in-law Ken and Christopher and cherished his grandchildren Christopher Jr., Olivia and Anthony and his Border Collie grand-dog, Tripp. He is also survived by nephews, nieces and his family in Zavadka.

Cyril was a gentle man with a kind, selfless and generous soul. He was loved, respected and admired by many neighbors, friends and family. His kindness, warmth and sweet nature are his lasting legacy. Cyril was a great conversationalist because he was an attentive listener and was genuinely interested in people’s stories. Cyril was an extraordinary grandfather who dedicated his time and energy attending every school music program, sporting event and dance recital.

Cyril loved America. He valued tradition, had a keen interest in modern technology and was referred to as “grandpa gadget”, the “family paparazzi” and “Chief”. Cyril loved parties, family dinners, bowling, road trips, old movies and the Everly Brothers. After retiring, Cyril and Ann visited Slovakia and toured Eastern Europe.

His easy smile and upbeat nature made a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He was stoic, never complained and possessed great strength and humility.

Cyril was a friend to many, but was first and foremost a family man; he will be missed and celebrated for the rest of our lives.
