Obituary For Charles Tortorici

Beloved father and grandfather, Charles P. Tortorici, age 82, passed away on March 29, 2024. Born in Brooklyn, he and his young family moved to the New Springville area of Staten Island in 1972, and later to Prince’s Bay, where he resided for the last 39 years.

In 1961, at age 18, Charles enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Notably, his ship, the U.S.S. Nitro, sailed to the Caribbean in support of the Task Force engaged in the quarantine of Cuba during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Having been awarded a Navy Expeditionary Medal, Charles returned home thereafter, where he remained a Navy reservist, attended trade school and became a talented buildings draftsman, eventually becoming employed by Rockefeller Center in the early 1970s. By the late 1970s, Charles founded his own commercial general contracting company, which he maintained for many years, working on projects predominantly in Manhattan.

At leisure, Charles cherished time with family both on Staten Island, and on summer weekends, at his second home for many years on Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey. There, he enjoyed spending time with his late parents, Rose and Louis, his sister, Marie, and her family, and was most fond of reflecting quietly by the water. An avid do-it-yourselfer, Charles never lacked for projects that he envisioned around either home, which he was always enthusiastic about completing with the help of family. During the holidays, he and his beloved late wife, Frances, often hosted their entire extended family for many memorable gatherings.

Charles is survived by his son Charles, daughter-in-law Claudia Califano and grandchildren Charles, Jr. and Aurelia, son Joseph, daughter-in-law Shelley and step-grandchildren Janette and Caitlin, and son Michael, daughter-in-law Kathy and grandchildren Matthew and Daniella. Charles’ memory and his legacy will live on in the many hearts of those he touched.

Viewing will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Hanley Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 4th at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace R.C. Church, 61 New Dorp Lane, Staten Island, NY 10306 followed by the interment at Resurrection Cemetery, Staten

Dear Uncle Charlie, I will always cherish those fond memories as a child when my beloved "Italian" side of the family gathered for Sunday night dinners after Church and those picnics in the parks. And, oh my goodness, those Christmas celebrations! After moving afar, you and Aunt Frances still always put a heart felt smile on my face. You were always so kind to me and my sister, Diane, and my Mom. It is with loving memories I extend my deepest condolences to the family... With Much Love and ever so Fond Memories, June
