Obituary For Barbara A. Martin

Barbara Ann Martin, 59, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2024, in Freehold, New Jersey after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on April 17, 1965, in Staten Island, New York, she was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend who will be remembered for her intelligence, kindness, strength and generosity throughout her life. She moved to Howell, New Jersey in 2018.

A graduate of St. John Villa Academy, Barbara went on to receive her Bachelor's degree from The College of Staten Island in 2014 where she frequently made the Dean's List and later pursued her Master's degree, which she obtained in 2020. She devoted 30 years of her professional life to Safe Horizon, an organization committed to supporting and advocating for victims of violence in New York City, where she rose to the esteemed position of Director of Restitution.

Barbara was known for her sharp wit and loving nature, always ready with a humorous quip or a helping hand. She had a passion for knitting, crafting, and baking, and enjoyed peaceful walks. Her hobbies were a reflection of her creative and nurturing spirit.

Barbara leaves behind a cherished family: her siblings Jennifer (Martin) Wright and her husband Ken, Robert Martin, Jr. and his wife Tina, Christine Toscano, Joseph Toscano and his wife Toni, Vinny Toscano and his wife Linda, and her mother, Maryann Martin. She will be dearly missed by her many nieces, nephews, great-nephews, and a great-niece whom she loved dearly and enjoyed spending time with. We will carry her in our hearts and thoughts forever.

Barbara also leaves behind her beloved cat, whom she affectionately called Momma Cat and who was a constant source of joy and companionship.

Predeceased by both her parents Robert Martin Sr. in 2016, and Annette Martin in 1995, and her grandparents, Barbara's memory will live on within the hearts of her family and friends.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday, June 29, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Hanley Funeral Home in Staten Island. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Peace at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2024. Interment will follow at Moravian Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Lymphoma Research Foundation or Safe Horizon, in honor of Barbara's lifelong commitment to helping others and her brave fight against this illness. Her legacy of love and service will continue to inspire all who knew her.

I worked closely with Barbara during her time at Safe Horizon and always admired her fierce advocacy for victims and survivors. She worked hard and always had time to listen to a colleague or share her humor! We heard many loving stories of her family, particularly describing the fun she had as an aunt. She also shared interesting stories about her pets. She will be missed!
